Three Reasons Not To Procrastinate

Most people procrastinate. Some do it deliberately while some don’t even realize it. Many procrastinators may not even be able to tell you why they put things off so often. Procrastination is defined as something that is put off needlessly. It is not procrastination if you haven’t done something just because you have had other things to do. However, if you are postponing your task and looking for other things to do instead, you are definitely procrastinating. This behavior can be very destructive and is certainly not very healthy. Therefore, if you are conscious of your procrastinating behavior, you must work on eliminating it forever.

There are numerous reasons not to procrastinate. One of the most important reasons to avoid putting things off is because not doing something till the last possible minute, you will only invite more total stress. You may imagine that you are saving yourself stress by avoiding the situation, however when it comes down to those last few moments when you have no other choice but to complete the task, you are likely to be under heavy stress. The more time you have on hand to accomplish something, the less stressed you must feel about doing it. If you finish a little bit of it every day, then you will most likely find you have finished long before your due date.

If you are procrastinating the task of writing a research paper or doing some work related project, you probably have strict due dates involved. Other tasks, such as cleaning out your closet, probably don’t have a due date that will be enforced by anyone other than yourself. People tend to procrastinate when it comes to doing these tasks. If there is no one to hold you accountable for not doing the task, it is even more likely that you will leave it undone for longer periods of time. Try and set a schedule for yourself with these tasks. Write down your schedule properly on a chart so that you will be reminded of your responsibilities. If you need to clean your entire house, assign one room for each day of the week. Therefore, you will get your home cleaned, but won’t waste a whole weekend doing it.

A second reason to avoid procrastination is because it will result in unproductiveness on other tasks. If you always have that one task you always put off in the back of your mind, then you will probably not be able to completely focus on other tasks that you may be doing. Go ahead and do the main task before you move on to something else. This will leave your mind free to concentrate on tasks to follow. It is rather difficult to focus on reading a book when you keep thinking of your upcoming term paper.

A good way to prioritize is to make a nice, old fashioned list of things you have to accomplish and their dates. Once you have listed everything, find a clean sheet of paper and list your tasks by importance and date in an organized manner. Put the things that are weighing heaviest on your mind near the top of your list so that you can get them out of the way first. Keep yourself free and complete the most important task on your “To-Do List”. Making a list can actually motivate you to get things done.

A third reason why you should steer clear of procrastination is because it invariably leads to sloppy work. If you wait until the last minute to finish a task, it is probably not going to be your best work. This may not be very important if the task is to clean your room. However, if the task involves an important work or a project, it means a lot more. It is always best to show your finest work when on a task. The only way you can show your best work is by giving yourself plenty of time to complete the task. This means you cannot leave the task undone until the last minute.

If you suffer from the procrastination disease, then consider making three small signs labeled with reasons you should not put things off and leave them in your workspace. They will remind you that your behavior of the past is not productive and will only cause more problems in the long run. The earlier you get things done, the better you will feel about everything!
